How the pandemic turned a local reporter into an award-winning data journalist

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:45 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Bara Vaida dWeb.News Tech News

Photo: Petra Wessman ia Flickr

Before the pandemic, National Public Radio reporter Alex Smith conducted most of his interviews in person.

But as the pandemic limited his access to people, he turned to other sources for story ideas and research – public health data and social media.

"I turned into this data journalist, which was an eye-opening experience," said Smith, who was the second-place winner for beat reporting in the 2020 Excellence in Health Journalism Awards. "I enjoyed it more than I expected. I got a new appreciation for data journalism."

Smith, a health reporter at NPR's flagship station, KCUR, in Kansas City, Mo., tracked what public health officials were posting about infection and mortality rates due to COVID-19 in Kansas and Missouri.

He found that both states were continuously changing the way they were reporting their data or weren't even reporting data at all. Kansas, for example, wasn't reporting on asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, which fed the perception that there was little community spread of the disease.

In Missouri, the state would report that there were plenty of hospital beds available when the hospitals themselves said that there weren't.

Smith was able to find such discrepancies by downloading documents and data posted by Kansas and Missouri state and local public health departments. He plugged the numbers in Excel sheets to track the data, and filed FOIA requests to obtain federal public health recommendations and mitigation measures for both states. The information he got back was sometimes at odds with what state officials were saying publicly.

Further, he stayed in close contact with sources in local hospitals and local public health officials, who spoke to him off the record about what was happening in reality versus what the data was saying. He also kept copies of social media posts of public health officials so that he could compare statements with data.

"I have talked to a lot of people who worked in public health and (they said to me), 'We don't want to have to implement these mask orders and these business shutdowns, so we aren't necessarily going to put out data the way big cities are doing," Smith said in a "How I Did It" interview for AHCJ. "I think there were a lot of counties that were hoping (COVID-19) would go away."

Now, almost midway through 2021, Smith says that public health officials have become better about talking to the media and providing information because they want to promote use of the  COVID-19 vaccines. However, he still hasn't gotten answers about why the public health departments had so much trouble reporting data. He suspects that part of the issue was the chronic lack of public health funding that left departments unable to rise to the unprecedented challenge COVID-19 posed.

"In a lot of these cases where there was missing data or omissions, I didn't necessarily find an intent to mislead," Smith said. "You have these rural counties running on a shoestring for decades … of course, it will be really hard for them to just all of a sudden be thrust into this new unprecedented situation and be able to serve the community in the way that was needed."

Smith's stories prodded state and local public health departments to make some needed changes. Often changes and improvements in public health data came after Smith's stories were published.

To learn more about Smith's work and his advice for journalists who want to pursue similar stories, read our HIDI interview with him and his contest entry for the AHCJ award.

Despite prioritizing wellness, Americans still feel they can be healthier

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:42 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from dWeb.News Tech News

By Zoya Gervis // SWNS

NEWS COPY W/ VIDEO + INFOGRAPHIC

In the past year, Americans have started changing their routines to better their health.

That's according to a new study that found Americans have started walking more instead of driving (26%), using free time to meditate (23%), taking a bath instead of a shower (22%) and using a standing desk instead of sitting down (21%).

While the past year has led many Americans to prioritize their health and wellness more than ever before, the poll of 2,273 Americans found that consumers are still seeking ways to be healthier, with more than one-third feeling they are not as healthy as they could be.

Although the majority of Americans stated that feeling better overall is the top reason they want to keep up with their wellness routines, 62% find it challenging to stick with their health-related goals.

Specifically, two-thirds said they find it difficult to eat as healthy as possible despite already having made the effort to make healthier meals, eat more vegetables and fruit, and increase their water intake.

Three in 10 finally had enough time to prioritize their fitness routines this past year, and 28% went so far as to purchase fitness equipment to maintain their activity levels at home. Although efforts have been made, 44% say they aren't in the best shape of their lives.

Conducted by OnePoll in conjunction with In The Raw® brand, the survey aimed to discover the swaps people have been making to better themselves in addition to the reasons that are getting in their way of making better choices.

Americans are continuing to search for alternatives that they can implement as a means to better themselves. For example, two out of three respondents desire to add more natural food products to their routines as a way to improve overall wellness. Nearly one-third have reduced the amount of sugar they use, with one in four using natural sweeteners. In fact, 70% are using sugar alternatives one to four times per week.

The top three natural food products that Americans are interested in using include natural sugar alternatives, dairy alternatives and plant-based meat options.

And nearly two-thirds are interested in learning how to use natural alternatives in cooking.

However, Americans are not incorporating natural food products into their routines because they are not sure how to use them (41%) or they feel they're too complicated to use (41%).

Respondents also report feeling that natural food products have a bad aftertaste (37%) and don't taste as good.

Yet, 70% stated they would be open to using natural ingredients, such as sugar and dairy alternatives, if they tasted as good as the real thing, signaling the need for products to meet that desire.

Two out of three Americans say they also desire an all-natural sugar alternative that actually tastes like sugar.

Those who do purchase sugar alternatives have noted the most important attributes they look for include the product's ability to taste like sugar (37%); versatility in recipes (36%); natural ingredients (35%); and equivalence to sugar (34%).

"With Americans prioritizing their overall health and wellness more than ever before, it's not surprising that people are interested in incorporating all-natural ingredients as a way to be even healthier. However, we've continued to hear how difficult it is to find those better-for-you alternatives that truly taste like and mimic the real thing," said Eileen Ahasic-Bierig, Vice President of Marketing at Cumberland Packing Corp. "This sentiment has led many brands, including our own, to consider ways to meet that demand, and we're finally able to eliminate the search for an all-natural sweetener that tastes, looks, crunches and acts exactly like sugar in your favorite recipes with our new All-Purpose In The Raw Optimal Zero Calorie Sweetener blend."

TOP 5 REASONS AMERICANS WANT TO KEEP UP WITH THEIR WELLNESS ROUTINES

Overall Wellness: Feeling better overall (40%)
Longevity: To increase longevity and quality of life (40%)
Preventative Health: To avoid potential future chronic illnesses (40%)
Physique: Clothes fitting better (34%)
Role Models: To set a good example for their children (33%)

New Books in June

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:41 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from dWeb.News Tech News

Looking for some summer reading? Check out the great new titles we have coming out in June!

Jennifer L. Morgan draws on the lived experiences of enslaved African women in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-centuries in Reckoning with Slavery to reveal the contours of early modern notions of trade, race, and commodification in the Black Atlantic.

In Decolonizing Memory, Jill Jarvis examines the crucial role that writers and artists have played in cultivating historical memory and nurturing political resistance in Algeria, showing how literature offers the unique ability to reckon with colonial violence and to render the experiences of those marginalized by the state.

The contributors to Beyond Man, edited by An Yountae and Eleanor Craig, reckon with the colonial and racial implications of the philosophy of religion’s history by staging a conversation between it and Black, Indigenous, and decolonial studies.

In Around the Day in Eighty Worlds, Martin Savransky draws on the pragmatic pluralism of William James and the ontological turn in anthropology to propose a “pluralistic realism”–an understanding of ontology in which at any given time the world is both one and many, ongoing and unfinished.

In How to Go Mad Without Losing Your Mind, La Marr Jurelle Bruce ponders the presence of “madness” in black literature, music, and performance since the early twentieth century, showing how artist ranging from Kendrick Lamar and Lauryn Hill to Nina Simone and Dave Chappelle activate madness as content, form, aesthetic, strategy, philosophy, and energy in an enduring black radical tradition.

Viet Le examines contemporary art in Cambodia and Viet Nam in Return Engagements to trace the entwinement of militarization, trauma, diaspora, and modernity in Southeast Asian art.

In Images of Beirut, Hatim El-Hibri explores how the creation and circulation of images has shaped the urban spaces and cultural imaginaries of Beirut, showing how images can be used to consolidate or destabilize regimes of power.

Editors Diana Paton and Matthew J. Smith combine more than one hundred classic and lesser-known texts in The Jamaica Reader to present a panoramic history of the country–from its pre-contact Indigenous origins to the present–and provide an unparalleled look at Jamaica’s history, culture, and politics.

In Colonial Debts, Rocio Zambrana uses the current political-economic moment in Puerto Rico to outline how debt functions as both an apparatus that strengthens neoliberalism and the island’s colonial relation to the United States.

Nicole M. Guidotti-Hernandez challenges the stereotypes of machismo in Archiving Mexican Masculinities in Diaspora with nuanced portraits of Mexican men and masculinities along and across the US-Mexico border.

The contributors to Words and Worlds, edited by Veena Das and Didier Fassin, examine the state of politics and the political imaginary within contemporary societies by taking up the everyday words such as democracy, revolution, and populism that we use to understand the political present.

A concise, easy-to-understand reference book, the revised and updated second edition of the bestselling All about Your Eyes tells you what you need to know to care for your eyes, various eye diseases and treatments, and what to expect from your eye doctor. The editors, Sharon Fekrat, Tanya S. Glaser, and Henry L. Feng are all physicians at the world-renown Duke Eye Center.

In an indispensable guide for all ethnographers, the editors of Experimenting with Ethnography, Andrea Ballestero and Brit Ross Winthereik, collect twenty-one essays that offer concrete suggestions for thinking about and doing ethnographic research and writing.

The contributors to Sound Alignments, edited by Michael K. Bourdaghs, Paola Iovene, and Kaley Mason, explore the myriad forms of popular music in Asia during the Cold War, showing how it took on new meanings and significance as it traveled across the region and forged and challenged alliances, revolutions, and countercultures.

Shaoling Ma examines late Qing China’s political upheavals and modernizing energies through the problem of the dynamics between new media technologies such as the telegraph the discursive representations of them in The Stone and the Wireless.

June’s Bookshop of the Month – Sam Read Bookseller

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:41 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from dWeb.News Tech News

For June’s Bookshop of the Month, we headed to the Lake District to visit Sam Read Bookseller. From Wordsworth, Coleridge and the Romantics, to John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter, EM Forster, Arthur Ransome and Malcolm Lowry, this award-winning independent bookshop in the heart of Grasmere lays claim to a number of impressive literary connections. Established by Sam Read in 1887, we spoke to Elaine, the current owner, about the shop’s celebrated history!

1. Named after the celebrated Victorian, Sam Read Bookseller is steeped in literary history. What’s it like running a bookshop with such a fascinating background?

It is most certainly a privilege to be the owner of such a prestigious bookshop!
When I bought it from my predecessor, Margaret Hughes (who had run the shop since 1969), I practically had to sign in blood to promise that I would keep the Sam Read bookselling name going. In fact, I’m only the sixth owner in the shop’s 134-year long bookselling history.

2. You’ve remained independent for almost 135 years, which you must be really proud of. Do you think being independent affects the way you do business or how you deal with customers? If so, how?

I’m sure being independent affects how we operate. Obviously, we can choose what we want to sell and this means we can offer our target audience exactly what they are looking for. Also, the service element is so crucial in what we do and, although a large proportion of our customers are spread out over the globe, they really do appreciate the lengths we go to source titles and supply them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

3. What’s it like running one of the oldest bookshops in the Lake District? How have you seen the area change over the years?

Apart from the Gingerbread shop, we are the longest serving shop in the village – everyone knows Sam Read’s and, although other businesses around us come and go, we so appreciate seeing successive generations of book-loving families come through our door. The Lake District, always historically a seasonal holiday destination, has seen trade bloom year round in more recent years. Sadly, we have lost most of our community-based businesses in favour of tourist-oriented ventures – my husband was born in the village and remembers butchers, garages, greengrocers, a bakery – indeed Grasmere, like most villages, was largely self sufficient. Fortunately, however, the bookshop continues to thrive, helped along too by the numerous literary connections we have here, ranging from Wordsworth, the Lake Poets and Ruskin, to Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, and Alfred Wainwright, to name but a few.

4. Last year was a landmark and challenging year for independent bookshops around the world. Given the restrictions we’re all experiencing during this pandemic, how has Sam Read Bookseller fared?

There is no doubt that last year was a challenging one, as it was for all businesses. Despite our physical doors being closed, we adapted by creating a successful online shop as well as offering a click and collect service for people living nearby. We saw orders come in from loyal Sam Read customers far and wide and we were proud to be able to supply them with all their lockdown literary requirements.

5. And finally, do you have any exciting plans for the shop in the coming months that you’d like to share with us?

It is lovely, however, to have been able to re-open our doors in April and we are looking forward to a busy summer/autumn ahead – no special plans but hopefully lots of happy customers to keep the Sam Read name going into the future.

To learn more about Sam Read Bookseller, check out their website, blog, Twitter, Instagram pages online, or pop into their shop in Grasmere!

This new iPhone 13 leak is terrific news for Apple fans

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:43 AM PDT

dWeb.News Article from Chris Smith dWeb.News Tech News

A series of reports said earlier this week that several companies in Apple's iPhone supply chain have started manufacturing parts for the iPhone 13 series. Among them is well-known chipmaker TSMC that manufactures the A-series and M-series chips for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Those reports seemed to suggest that Apple is looking to launch the iPhone 13 handsets on time this year, despite the ongoing pandemic and chip shortage. Still, the reports said there are no guarantees that Apple will launch the iPhone 13 phones during the usual September timeframe. Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 phones in mid-October, about a month later than usual, and the handsets hit stores in two waves in late October and early November. Manufacturing issues and travel delays are the oft-cited reasons that reportedly forced Apple to postpone its iPhone 12 launch event and release dates.

A new report from Korea says that Samsung and LG have independently begun producing a key component that will be found in all iPhone 13 models, the OLED screen. But it's Samsung that's reportedly tasked with making the most exciting iPhone 13 component this year, and the company has now reportedly begun to manufacture this crucial component for Apple. This is a huge indication that the iPhone 13 will be released on time in September this year, and it’s definitely the news we’ve been waiting to hear.

dWeb.News Article from Andy Meek dWeb.News Tech News

Internet commerce has exploded over the past year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which confined millions of people around the world to their homes for months on end in addition to shuttering all kinds of shops and commercial enterprises. That forced consumers to rely more than ever on the delivery of goods to their homes that they were unable to pick up in person — a boon, of course, for Internet giants like Amazon.

An Internet behemoth like Amazon, of course, is able to handle an influx of new customers and all the commercial and security imperatives that come in tandem with that influx. Smaller companies, apparently, not so much. Case in point: The Swedish fintech company Klarna acknowledged a data breach in recent days, one that inspired users of the company’s buy now pay later service to flock to social media and complain that they’d somehow gotten access to strangers’ personal data.
