Dental patients and practitioners could be better protected from COVID-19 and other airborne viruses and bacteria thanks to the development of a new environment-friendly shield by a multidisciplinary team from the University of Bristol and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). This shield could increase patient visits and reduce wait times.

The device, called NoPaS (Novel Patient Shield), is designed to protect patients and practitioners from harmful diseases including COVID-19, which can be spread through aerosols generated during dental procedures. This device can also reduce clinical waste and the need for disposable personal protective equipment (PPE) by up to 80%.

COVID-19 has significantly reduced access to dental care. Routine dental treatment such as root canal treatment and fillings were stopped in the initial lockdown. It has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Many procedures in dentistry are “aerosol-generating procedures” (AGPs). These aerosols could carry virus particles or bacteria that risk the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases.

Dr Mojtaba Dorri , Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in the Bristol Dental School and University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), who led the development of NoPaS, said: “During the COVID-19 pandemic the development of innovative environmentally-friendly solutions have been much needed to allow routine dental care to be delivered in a safe environment without risking virus transmission. It is vital that routine dental care is maintained in order to protect public health.

With minor modification, NoPaS can be used for medical procedures on the head and neck, including endoscopy, anaesthetics and ear, nose and throat.

Our NoPaS prototype was successfully tested thanks to grants from the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute, MRC Confidence In Concept, and Bristol and Weston Hospitals Charity, (formerly Above & Beyond). We are now actively looking for partnerships to bring NoPaS into mass-production.

In England 19 million NHS dental appointments and eight million courses of dental treatments were missed between March 2020 and April 2021. Suspension of routine dentistry led to the increased use of antibiotics – by 25% in England – and dental extraction for otherwise treatable dental diseases.

The recommended 15 to 60 minutes fallow period after any AGP has led to most UK dental practices operating at less than half their pre-pandemic capacity and almost half are unable to maintain their financial sustainability for the next year. Some patients in England are currently on a three year waiting list. AGPs should have additional PPE. This increases clinical waste and presents a threat to the environment. Experts also suggest that transmission of COVID-19 and other airborne infections will be a risk for the foreseeable future.

Espoo in Finland – Nokia today announced it will supply IP Telecom optical networking equipment to extend the operator’s data centre cloud connectivi infrastructure between metro areas in Portugal This expansion allows IP Telecom to reach business and government end users through a highly secure, encrypted 100Gbps optical data center interconnect ( DCI ) solution .

IP Telecom selected Nokia’s optical networking technologies because of its unique scaling capabilities in growing DCI capacity from 10Gbps through 100 and 200Gbps line rates. In the future, the network will be able to offer GE services. Line encryption is another critical capability. This is where every wavelength is encrypted before it is transmitted over the fiber optic network. As data theft becomes more common, this capability is becoming increasingly important for government and business network users. Each customer is protected from unauthorized data tapping through the fiber optic network by using encryption and key management.

IP Telecom has three data centers in Portugal (Lisbon Porto, Viseu and Porto). Customers are connected via dedicated wavelengths that are managed in a unique, redundant manner. Strong service level agreements (SLAs) ensure that each customer’s data are safe. This network expansion reaches out to additional nodes throughout the country, increasing IP Telecom’s access to customer locations through additional encrypted 100Gbps and 200Gbps wavelengths.
